Jane Bannington, ASD Specialist Advisor

Jane has been committed to special needs education throughout her professional career of over 35 years. Jane has worked in a number of different special schools, teaching young people of all ages and varying degrees of abilities. She has experience across a range of specialist SEN roles including teaching in a behaviour unit for children ages 7-13 with autism and learning difficulties, teaching in an assessment unit in an MLD special school, and being a teaching head of the PMLD department in a school for children with severe and challenging needs. Jane has also worked as a Life Skills trainer for SCOPE, a youth leader, a respite carer, and a Mencap support worker. In 1994, Jane opened a fully inclusive nursery and holiday club for children of all abilities, which became a flagship setting for Shropshire, demonstrating effective and successful inclusion. From 2008, Jane worked as a development co-ordinator for Autism West Midlands, in which she supported parents and worked alongside schools and other professionals in a multi-disciplinary team to meet individual needs. Whilst carrying out this role, Jane completed a Post Grad Certificate in Autism. From 2012, for six years, Jane worked as an ASC Advisory teacher in the borough of Knowsley, advising school teachers, training parents and professionals and providing evidence to support diagnosis. Jane also currently runs a private consultancy that offers autism specialist tutoring as part of a respite package, on her smallholding, for children of all ages.

Jane is dedicated to fostering positive mental health and emotional well-being through direct work with children and young people to support their education and their ability to successfully cope with transition and change. She is trained in Makaton signing and has particular strengths in setting up and demonstrating the effectiveness of visual strategies in supporting children's communication and behaviour.
